Sorry yall! I didn’t realize you guys wanted that article and we hate to steal… We just got a total boner from Pooley’s writing and wanted to archive it for posterity’s sake.
Can we look forward to Life Rape: Directors Cut Redux in 3D?
FYI This is a fake blog by people too misanthropic to be pretentious, we get confused at complex phrases like “certain medias” and the only person we know who writes letters is Win Butler.
In all honesty I was reposting it so a couple of my friends could read it because it disappeared (I’m sure it wasn’t censorship!) and it slipped my mind for a second that you were a serious magazine and would get seriously upset. It wasn’t passive agression that drove me to make that blog post as much as it was enthusiasm for the content and – apologetically – lack of respect for attribution and taking things seriously.
We finally launched our kickstarter account and we are already hard at work on both pre-production with Manny for the album but also working on some killer merchandise for all yall.
Don’t forget to also support Clones Of The Queen kickstart their EP too! (via Supporting Local Artists)
Lastly, but not least, this is going to be on everybody’s christmas wish list… like Crystal Castles’ ‘black eyed madonna’ our friends in FIDLAR have released their iconic ‘CHEAP BEER’ shirt. In your face, Warhol – nobody drinks soup in the future!
We are about to embark on our first foray into ‘begging over the internet’ otherwise known as ‘fundraising through the brilliant entity known as Kickstarter.com‘ and we are very excited. You see, there’s been talk about ‘making an album album’ ‘going on tour’ and ‘taking over the world’ since our first shows but only recently did our band put money in our proverbial mouths in order to take on the most ambitious venture yet: recording our debut LP.
We’ve made the first of many monetary commitments that will culminate in our band, GRLFRNDS, recording an album that will rain ‘shock and awe’ upon our already ravenous, sexy fan-base. Along with some of our esteemed colleagues who are also releasing albums in the near future (The Jump Offs, Painted Highways, Clones of The Queen, Aesthete to name just a few) we’re hoping to put Hawaii on the map. Turn this place into a dot in the middle of the pacific that hipsters all over the world will begin to circle on their maps, globes and atlases. This might be youthful idealism but I recently turned 25 and the word youthful is starting to seem like a stretch. So color me idealistic but this smile on my face as I type this reflects a certain smugness rooted in a couple Czech beers, the memory of an energetic marathon set we KILLED at 39Hotel this past Tuesday and the knowledge we have a couple cards up our sleeves.
If you made it this far I applaud the fact you indulged me by reading my drunken rants and longwinded exposition and I think you deserve to crack one open yourself and listen to these songs I picked out for you. Love yall 4ever.
Before FIDLAR, alias of Zac Carper (808scene veteran and son of the eponymous surfboard shaper J.C.), I knew Z.C. because we lived, respectively, on the floor and couch of what my parents would call a ‘doss house’ but what we knew as ‘Andrew’s Place.’ This is before I was in GRLFRNDS and apart from some drug-induced bedroom experiments Z.C. wasn’t in any band either. I think we talked about starting a band together but mostly we got really high without consequence until he went to watch the Shins/Ratatat one night, lost his mind, crashed a car, took some pills and moved to LA the next day. Almost 4 years later Z.C. is still in LA ‘living the dream’ of surfing, skating and working on music full time as an engineer in a studio, session musician and with his own band FIDLAR in which he is the primary songwriter/voice of a generation.
“Cocaine is not a drug/Sucking dick is not a crime” – FIDLAR
A few months ago he started posting videos on Youtube. I started watching them. Started drinking and have not stopped since. To say these are ‘anthems’ about getting wasted is an understatement. These are confessions brandished like threats, saturated for decades in booze and chemicals. A celebration of debauchery that’s bratty and punky and fun – like what the Exploding Hearts would listen to on a long ride home.
“Wake, bake, skate and do a bunch of drugs” – Zac Carper
FIDLAR have a myspace but their Youtube account is a whole lot more fun. Zac trolls the internet looking for videos of people in compromising situations – smoking meth and shaking their tits – and edits them into ADHD-paced clips for songs that will eventually make up their upcoming debut album. Recently he has branched out into unabashed narcissism: starring in one of his latest videos for the song ‘Crackhead Ted’ (named after Honolulu’s own living legend) with his sister Alice.
“Shooting guns just for fun because I’m an american.” – Portrait of the Artist, As a Young Man
Zac is back in town today so that’s what got me thinking about him. That and the fact that along with GRLFRNDS, Aesthete, Painted Highways, Clones of The Queen, The Jump Offs and a few others they are one of the absolute/if not the best band with a ‘Hawaii connection.’ Unfortunately ZC is by himself on this trip so Hawaii has yet to experience the raw power of FIDLAR live. He has made a single consolation to the Hawaii scene in his video for the song ‘grlfrnds’ which is perhaps the most nostalgic, beautiful and affectionate portrait of ‘the 808’ with old-school video clips from The Sticklers, Buckshot Shorty, old Coffee Talk shows and appearances from Hawaii’s best and brightest (including gratuitous footage of myself and Andrew ‘fucking’ Hamilton):
“All I’ve got are my friends!” – We fucking love you too!
In one the most flattering things that anyone has ever done for us; Zac actually told me he wrote that song for our band GRLFRNDS – that it didn’t fit in with the FIDLAR repertoire – and we have graciously worked that song into our current set. We are looking forward to playing a ‘secret’ show just to play his song and expect to see everyone going ape-shit nutz when we perform it! He has also worked on the remix for No Hope H.S. that’s available on our myspace – I personally consider him a de-facto member of the band – and he is constantly listening to our demos, giving us tips and fostering dreams of working and playing shows together. Until then I expect to see more amazing videos for these wonderful songs and I will tell anyone willing to listen: FIDLAR are my favorite band around!
